Cycle the Highlights of Mekong 4 days
Overview
Itinerary
DAY 01: HO CHI MINH CITY – TRA VINH
(Cycling distance up to 50 km )
Leave the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City behind and drive south toward to Vinh Long and embark on a boat journey out to one of the Mekong islands, biking along narrow country lanes, easy dirt tracks and trails. This is biking at its best: passing through tiny orchards, colorful riverside life, pedaling across innumerable wooden bridges and pausing to chat with welcoming villagers. Cross a narrow canal on a local sampan and reach the main ferry, traveling like locals across the expansive Co Chien River. The final stretch of the ride is along quiet roads to the charming Khmer town of Tra Vinh. Arriving early this afternoon, there is plenty of time to explore side trails. Today’s journey is a great first impression of the ‘Heart of the Mekong’. Overnight in Tra Vinh.

DAY 02: TRA VINH – CAN THO
(Cycling distance up to 80 km )
Day 2 marks a unique day of riding and sightseeing. As much of the area is populated by Khmer people, the regional architecture is interesting and there are many Khmer temples to stop and admire en route. Cycle along the beautiful surroundings with a support vehicle always nearby. The road is peaceful, narrow, and very picturesque all the way to Can Tho. Pedal to Ba Om Pond with its magnificent lotus flowers, where many local women get their futures predicted in the small temple nearby. En route, visit a local Buddhist Temple (doubling as a school) and learn about the life of the students. Arrive late in the afternoon to Can Tho, the Mekong’s largest town located at the confluence of the Can Tho and Hau Giang Rivers. Overnight in Can Tho.

DAY 03: CAN THO – CHAU DOC
(Cycling distance up to 50km )
The third day’s ride is split into two sections and is a contrast to the previous day’s ride. In the early morning, we will take a boat trip to the famous Cai Rang floating market before riding on a narrow paved road market to Phong Dien. The route weaves through a bustling morning market along the banks of the very busy river. You’ll absorb sights of endless cottage industries, timber merchants, coconut shredders, small docks loading/unloading rice, and tiny vibrant markets.
Afterward, we’ll begin cycling towards Chau Doc. The road is quite hilly, but the path is unique. The presence of Thot Not trees indicates proximity to Cambodia and the local people speak Vietnamese as their second language. Along the way, you will stop at the killing fields of Vietnam at Bachuc, where Polpot’s regime massacred over 3,000 Vietnamese in 1978. Then, we’ll continue cycling for a mid-afternoon arrival in Chau Doc. Those with energy to spare can climb Sam Mountain for a great view of the sunset. You will enjoy dinner and stay overnight in Chau Doc.

DAY 04: CHAU DOC – HO CHI MINH CITY
(Cycling distance up to 40km )
After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll board a boat and head to the floating houses of the upper Mekong River. We’ll stop to look beneath the floating homes at catfish and red snapper farms. Then, we’ll keep boating to visit a Cham village of about 12,000 artists where the locals weave sarongs and hats by hand, in keeping with their ancestral tradition. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant and return to Ho Chi Minh City.
